FM_LearningLog

Overview

FM_LearningLog is a one-off FiLMS module designed for Husky (For any future sales request for something similar to learning log, please talk to Chris Amyot). The module allows the users to create notes while taking their online courses. The deliverables for the Husky Learning Log are the following:

  • Ability to open/close learning log from course interface
  • Add notes with course, lesson, and module title attached
  • Ability to edit and delete test from notes
  • Filter notes by course
  • Notes will be printable and can be saved within HuskyLearns.ca
  • Some level of reporting or ability for supervisors to view or receive notes (optional thus not implementing)
  • Husky branding and graphical enhancements of “Learning Log” interface
  • An abstract of each course (or each module for the E&PS HOIMS course), like the Cortex one that Mary kindly provided.
  • A flagging system (for example a star or a question mark)

Usage

Learning Log Notes inside Course

Learning Log Course

Learner will be seeing this screenshot above when the (s)he launches a learning log course. (S)he can writes notes and questions for every lesson.

Notes will be saved automatically when:

  • (S)he exits the course properly by clicking the 'exit' button instead of the browser's close 'x' button
  • (S)he plays a different lesson - this can be done by clicking the previous or next button in the course interface or selecting a lesson from Menu
  • (S)he selects different courses / modules / lessons from the drop-down boxes

Download Learning Log Notes

When the user has active enrollment of any of the learning log course, a shortcut link "Download / Print Learning Log" will be displayed in the left sidebar of the homepage. This link will be redirected to the new page, where the users can download the notes as PDF.

Limitation

  • Learning Log only work for ICOM Flash courses
  • Learning Log, along with the course attached with it, will not be resized when the browser window is resized. It's minimum dimension is 1072px x 650px, which can be viewed even with the smallest desktop monitor.
  • The notes / questions will not be saved if user did not exit the course properly (i.e. click on the 'x' button on the browser window). This happens in IE.
  • The course will not be automatically paused when user selects either Overview or Help button (a dialog window will show up, overlaying the course). Learning Log don't have the capability to control the course (i.e. pause the course).

FAQ / Troubleshooting

1) I would like to enroll some users to the ICOM course with learning log and the rest without learning log.

This can be done by importing the course again, but this time update the course and create a new structure. The course will now has 2 structures. Do modify the structures so that one has ICOM SCORM 1.2 as launch method and another has Learning Log. Also, do change the structure name so that they are easier to be distinguished when enrolling users.

2) I would like to make changes to the content of course overview, which is displayed in the Learning Log and PDF notes printout.

Go to the course edit page and you can edit the content through course description.

3) Help! The notes are not saving properly.

There are 2 reasons for that:

  • The user did not exit the course properly - (s)he clicks on the 'x' button on the IE browser window.
  • The course is not configured properly to be compatible with the learning log.

4) How do I know this [name an issue] is caused by Learning Log?

Have you checked the following:

  • Change the course structure's launch method to "ICOM SCORM 1.2" and try to launch the course. If this fixes the problem, then it's Learning Log issue.
  • If the notes are not saving properly, see 3).

Issue

Husky is reporting an issue with 3 courses that use the Learning Log. FiLMS doesn't recognize course / lesson completion even though learner went through all the lessons and have checkmarks in the menu for all lessons. See WorkFront Issue for more details.

Diagnosis / Solution

Those 3 course packages are corrupted. I've tried to re-import the courses I've grabbed from QA3 and managed to get those fixed.
